WHEN BERSIH TURNS KOTOR

Democracy in Malaysia was successfully introduced to the entire world last Saturday. This historical event is greatly contributed by the country’s Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak, who was too busy with his work to the extent that he had forgotten his promise of permitting BERSIH 2.0 to be held in Independence Stadium (Stadium Merdeka), after his meeting with the King and the BERSIH 2.0 committee.

From the rally, citizens could witness how effectively the Malaysian Royal Police or Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) and the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) were being utilized to assist the crowd by shutting down the capital city Kuala Lumpur with roadblocks and setting up check points to ensure public safety. Besides, the friendly and caring police forces gathered them together in one place and fired tear gas canisters and chemical-laced water from all directions to guide the huge crowd to follow the correct route to the stadium on that day.

Unfortunately, according to local newspapers such as Utusan Malaysia, The Star, New Straits Times and China Press, there were many stubborn demonstrators who disobeyed the law and fought against the authorities. The newspapers further illustrated and explained that the police’s brutal actions were merely counteraction against the offensive public who refused to be arrested. These brave and responsible police, whom we can hardly see their competency, could handle difficult situation such as firing tear gas canisters into Tung Shin hospital precinct without causing any harm to the patients and arrested protesters who hid themselves in the hospital (Perhaps the police were afraid that the patients in the hospital might be taken as hostages). This proved the Malaysian Royal Police’s intelligence in justifying the complex scenario, which takes arresting the ‘terrorists’ as the primary task(patients' health is secondary). What a wise decision to make!

Despite the numerous injuries and a death caused by the unreasonably overreacted measures and actions taken against the peaceful rally, Home Minister, Hishammuddin Hussein proudly praised the police for carrying their duties efficiently and had successfully minimized the chaos from outburst. Moreover, the Prime Minister kindly mocked at the rally, claiming that it was just a minority of people who turned out that day. He added that this group of people cannot reflect the majority who yearn to reform electoral system, but the interesting thing is that his talent of acting was clearly shown when he publicly laughed the opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who suffered from injuries caused by the tear gas, imitating the way he groaned in agony with compassion.

However, Najib’s effort of promoting democracy and human rights was not appreciated by the public, as well as international organizations like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, which wrote him a joint letter to voice their dissatisfaction on Najib’s ways of handling this peaceful rally 'peacefully'. They considered all these actions taken to counter the peaceful protest as unnecessary and totally uncalled-for, as it is not political motivated to topple the ruling government as mentioned by the BN politicians. It is completely unreasonable as some activists were detained under the Emergency Ordinance for ‘waging war against the King’.

Again, Malaysia has earned its fame globally, in terms of its counter-terrorism and respecting democracy as well as human rights, and this further helps to promote tourism in Malaysia. Today, I believe the public can understand why Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen claimed that the ‘Cuti-cuti Malaysia’ Facebook page costs RM 1.8 million.

1 MALAYSIA

In fact, many people did not understand this concept when it was first mentioned by our Prime Minister Najib, even until today. The reason is because the whole world has already learnt that there is only one country which is known as Malaysia, and yet we as Malaysians are still unaware of that. Honestly, I am more familiar with the 'Malaysian Malaysia' promoted by the DAP for quite some time. I believe others may agree with me. All this while, we always hear the importance of this concept and how it will improve the Malaysian government in every aspect.

However, many are confused with this concept due to the impressive incidents that seem to go against the concept, such as the crisis of Perak state government, Beng Hock's case and Datuk Nasir Safar's famous quote, 'Chinese(especially women) are here(Malaysia) to sell their bodies and Indians are beggars'. Besides, we can even see the rising of the so-called non-government organisation, the Pribumi Perkasa and its potential leader, Ibrahim Ali together with the capable Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin who claimed to have embraced the '1 Malaysia' concept with his 'Malay first and Malaysian second' supporting statement. Let us all hope that no one else will get confused with this great concept, especially our respective BN leaders.

DIPLOMATIC TENSION

Shaariibuugiin Altantuyaa (1978 – 2006) was murdered by C-4 explosives or was somehow killed first before her body destroyed with C-4 in October 2006 in a deserted area in forested land near the Subang Dam in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam. The Mongolian lady was clamied to be introduced to Abdul Razak Baginda, a defense analyst from the Malaysian Strategic Research Centre think-tank, under Malaysian famous DPM, Najib Tun Razak, and reportedly began a relationship with him. She then worked as Abdul Razak’s translator on a shady deal he was brokering for the Malaysian government to buy submarines from France. The 'couple' seemed to have travelled to Paris together for the submarine deal.

Some rumours was saying that Altantuya came to come Kuala Lumpur with a cousin in early October 2006 to confront Abdul Razak. Then, she went missing on Oct 19. Her last letter that was uncovered showing that she had been blackmailing Razak. However, it was not clearly stated how she blackmailed him. Abdul Razak and three members of the police force were arrested during the murder investigation. The other two murder suspects (Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri, 30 and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar, 35) had been members of the Unit Tindakan Khas (the Malaysian Police Special Action Force or counter-terrorism unit) and were both assigned to the office of the Deputy Prime Minister, who was also the Defence Minister at the that time.

Throughout the investigation, this incident seems to be more complicated when two statutory declarations were made. First evidence was told by Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamaruddin , saying that our dearest DPM's wife, Rosmah Mansor, and Acting Colonel Aziz Buyong and his wife, Norhayati, Rosmah’s aide-de-camp, were present at the scene of the murder and Aziz Buyong was the 'chosen' one who placed C4 plastic explosive on Altantuya’s body and blew it up. Aziz was seeking apology from Raja Petra to be published in certain website and newspaper. That's the end of the first new evidence. Soon after that incident, Abdul Razak Baginda's private investigator P. Balasubramaniam, disclosing Najib's links to the murdered Mongolian girl. He said the police omitted information about the 'intimate' relationship between Najib and Mongolian victim Altantuya Shaariibuu in his statement.

According to Bala, Abdul Razak was not directly involve in this case. He also said that all traces of allegations with references to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Altantuya Shaariibuu's murder were erased. On Sunday 6 july, our government police sought help from Interpol to find the brave private investigator who was missing together with his entire family. Balasubramaniam is said to take refuge in a neighbouring country with his wife and children. Well, will Bala be rewarded by keeping the truth as secret forever? On the contrary, will he and his family's life be threatened by telling the truth ? Nobody knows and even if some people know, they won't dare to care. Anyway, as Malaysians, our main concern is that this incident has badly impressed other countries with Malaysia's wonderful image. Hopefully this will not affect the 'intimate' relationship between Malaysia and Mongolia.

THE AFTERMATH

The 12th General Elections has now become a hot topic of the public and the issue is so popular that one can hear it everywhere, even in the public toilet whereas the central government started to question each other ‘Why would this happen?’ Apart from having their unexplainable curiosity, some began to blame one another for the shocking defeat. They should have realised the importance of this incident for them to learn the lessons from their past mistakes, instead of blaming others for the poor election result.

In fact, this phenomenon is still comprehensible because according to some experienced senior politicians, 'pointing at each other' is always a common practice or culture in Malaysian politics. Therefore, it is not surprising for the public to see BN leaders like Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, Deputy PM Najib and formal Penang Chief Minister Dr Koh would still ask all the fellow Malaysians to stay calm and not to worry over the changes in state government. It seems like they were still unaware of the needs of the whole nation to change.

That is the voice of the people.
